It’s fun to make these treats with children….and with creative minded adults
- Measure ½ cup warm water into a bowl
- Sprinkle 1 Tbsp yeast on the water and stir until it is dissolved
Separate 1 egg yolk from its white. Set the white aside in a small dish.
Mix:
- 1 egg yolk
- ¼ cup honey or sugar
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 cup milk
- With the yeasty water you prepared in the first step
Add
- 1 tsp salt
- Enough flour to make a stiff, easy to handle dough
Knead the dough for 5 minutes, then let the dough rise for about one hour. After it has rested for an hour, cut the dough into strips. Use your hands to roll each strip into a rope.
This is the end of the part you do alone. The rest is to do with your friends!
By now you have prepared about 2 dozen (twenty four) strips of pretzel dough. Divide these up between everyone who is partaking of this snack making activity. Each person can shape their ropes into pretzel shapes or letters or peace signs and place each shape on a greased cookie sheet.
Plan for ways to identify peoples creations so that they can find their own pretzels back after they have been baked.
Beat the egg white and brush it over the tops of the pretzel shapes, then sprinkle each pretzel with coarse salt.
Bake at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes
Makes 2 dozen pretzels
Serve hot with mustard
