How to make a yummy Cold Coffee drink
It’s been heat wave after heat wave, here in Alberta, and, as someone who has become increasingly sick from the heat as I age, I gotta tell ya, it’s been awful. On the hottest of days I try (and fail) to nap in front of a fan until the sun goes down at around 10pm.
It’s crazy, everything about me flares up: My skin hurts, my bones and muscles hurt worse than usual, I feel sick to my stomach, and I am irritated. Then the sun finally sets and I begin to feel ok again, but exhausted, as though I had been holding my breath through a deep sea dive. I can get up, I can water my thirsty little garden.
When I was a child, I would play in the heat like it was nothing. Bike rides that lasted hours. Tree climbing and then lingering for a while in the cool, firm arms of the trees. Swimming in the river or in a kind neighbour’s pool. Performing maintenance on my bicycle. Sun tanning. The heat didn’t bother me at all, but now, it really bothers me, even the warm sun shining down on my skin hurts.
On Saturday my daughter was sick too, she had a reaction to her second COVID shot, and felt like she had a bad flu all that day. She wanted a cold coffee. I lined up my husband to deliver it for me, and then created a cold coffee filled with mother love for her.
Here is the recipe i made:
- In a 2 cup jar, pour 1 cup fresh brewed, cooled, coffee
- Stir in 2 Tablespoons of Maple Syrup – the real kind
- When maple has dissolved in coffee, add an ice cube to cool it down more.
- When liquid is cold, remove the ice cube so it doesn’t water down the flavour
- Pour in 1 cup Oatmilk
- Stir well
- Add a handful or two of frozen Raspberries to keep the drink cool
That is how you make it for my daughter who avoids dairy and sugar. If you want to make it for someone who doesn’t care what their coffee contains, try this version:
- In a 2 cup jar, pour 1 cup fresh brewed, cooled, coffee
- Stir in 3 Tablespoons of sugar
- Once sugar has dissolved, plop in an ice cube until the liquid is cold.
- When liquid is cold, remove the ice cube so it doesn’t water down the flavour
- Pour in 1 cup Homo Milk
- Stir well and enjoy!
